I'd never understood why women are willing to pay $50 for a haircut and another $50 for a hilight or dye job. Last year was the first time I've ever paid more than $8 for a cut. Now I understand. My friend Jenifer asked me to hilight her hair using some product at Walmart. I thought she was joking as she normally goes to some expensive salon in Dallas. She wasn't.
She convinced me it would be really easy and that anyone could do it. She pulled her hair up so I could hilight various layers. We mixed some kind of goo in with a blue solvent. It looked like a highschool science project! After strapping on a pair of rubber gloves, I went to work. I remember her telling me to start at the root but I kept forgetting. There were lots of places I was a few centimeters to a full inch from her roots. One mistake not to make... don't try to correct anything with your finger. Just makes a MESS! She pulled the top layers down and I did those too. The process started out with her being encouraging and laughing with me. I was freaked out. The longer it went on, the less encouraging and more frustrated she became and the more scared I became.
So we finished the application, cleaned up the mess in the bathroom, and waited the 30 minutes. She came out and her hair was totally blonde!!! Yikes!!! After she fixed it up like she normally does, it looked a lot better. So she saved $40 over the cost of getting it professionally done. Advice for the women: Don't ask us to do your hair thinking "Any idiot can do this if they follow the directions"; cause most men just can't do hair. Period. Advice for the men: Avoid this scenario at all costs! Don't let her convince you to do it! Take her to dinner instead.
